Ever have that unexpected moment that shakes you alive? A pivotal decision ready to be made with zero notice whatsoever.
In calm waters, we rarely see what's below the surface. In the darkness of night, when most animals, amphibians, and sea creatures are lurking and moving, we can only see a reflection of their eyes. That is, if we even get a glimpse. Moving in uncertainty and complete darkness heightens our senses.
In a few select locations in the world, there's a special organism called phytoplankton that illuminates brightly in dark waters. The catch is, the phytoplankton only illuminate when provoked.
In our deepest, darkest hours. When everything around us seems dark and gloomy (especially if you watch the news), something special arises. Most people may not call this special. It’s our deepest fears. The struggles we never share. Where our voice was suppressed instead of being spoken.
When kayaking through the dark waters where phytoplankton reside, they light up as little glowing specks floating on the surface, paving the way ahead.
As spring turns into summer, we are moving through more uncharted waters. A bump here, a rock there, a stronger current than expected. Where is something deeper down ready to surface and be expressed?
Expressions move differently. When pressure silences you, explosive yuck emanates and disrupts valuable relationships and even your health. Ever lash anger onto another when they had nothing to do with the issue at hand? Ever been on the receiving end of anger for someone's bad day? That slime leaves a residue.
Anger only serves as something that is not in alignment. Pause. Dig deeper before expressing something, and see where the real conflict resides.
The dark waters are not an enemy ready to be conquered. Its movement through the dark waters allows something to be witnessed in a new way. When buried truth begins to glow, a true voice emerges.
Presence keeps you steady when impulse arrives. Not every impulse needs expression. Anger may have been unmet attention as a child. Precision gives us the grace to know how and best to express what arises within.
Discernment comes when we acknowledge the difference between speaking from reaction versus speaking from revelation. There are moments when pressure does not create the truth — it reveals the part of us that has been carrying it quietly.
Applied discernment is knowing when to speak from revelation only.
What part of your voice has been buried beneath shame, fear, guilt, or adaptation? What would change if you let it speak clearly now?
