The winter brings out the harshness of nature. Cold. Wet. Cloudy. Damp. Looking outside seems as if the dismal abyss of rapture is ready to pull you out into the depths of the unknown. It claws deep into your skin. No sunshine for warmth.
The mind plays ping-pong, analyzing each piece of knowledge within its reach. It's too cold. It's too windy. Will my skin shrivel up and flake off? Leaving the house becomes a monumental task as the harsh air smacks you across the face as if Mike Tyson punched you.
Yet, this time is different.
It's not a goal. It's not a new habit wondering if you can keep it for more than 21 days. It's simply an attitude. Your approach is different.
This time the cold doesn’t stop you in your tracks.
As you take the first step outside, the stray ray of sun tickles your eyes. With the dry air piercing your nose, you imagine this being the soothing warmth of the fire inside. You feel this heat move from your heart through each limb. Suddenly the extreme cold doesn’t even phase your feet or hands. You walk from the house to the car as if it's a normal spring day, only waiting for something beautiful to capture your eyes.
A bright red cardinal flies across your view, then perks on a tree branch smiling to you in all its glory. Giggling to yourself, life is good. Everything will be okay. I’m not cold. I am perfectly fine. Suddenly, the little things don’t even itch under your skin anymore.
How we handle the little moments of discomfort dictate how larger life situations go. From here on out, the cold never bothers you anymore. This becomes a pivot point in your approach to life.
This is a character-building moment.
Previously, your mind played games in your head. Build character by changing your approach to a situation. When you handle your emotions differently, everything else falls into place easily. The hardest things are now quite doable.
