Does everything always seem urgent? Leadership can be a firefighter in disguise. Your fire extinguisher is always ready, always on, anticipating what, where, and when the next fire will be that needs to be put out.
When you love to solve problems, you sometimes attract problems to solve and create your own chaos. (breathe, pause, let that sink in for a moment. Then, continue reading.)
Some people constantly create their own chaos.
It’s time to take a different approach.
Travel can be a chaotic mess or smooth and seamless. The choice is yours.
Imagine you’re a pilot. Before an aircraft enters the runway, the pilot pauses at the holding line. The destination is known. The engines are running. All the coordinates are entered. The safety checklist is verified. All protocols have been run through.
The aircraft is fully capable of moving yet capability alone does not determine when it’s time to proceed.
Here’s the difference for neurodivergent leaders. You notice everything. You recognize the destination. You anticipate what’s coming and see several moves ahead of everyone else. It’s your special brilliance, after all. That early perception can create a feeling to act now, hence urgency. But, seeing the path and having clearance to enter the runway is not the same thing.
This is where discernment becomes essential.
Discernment is the ability to distinguish between the excitement of possibility and precision of timing. Discernment asks, is the signal/input complete, do the conditions support the move, and whether the decision remains true when the urgency settles.
Holding short is not indecision. It’s the final point of discernment before commitment and trusting your decision. Once the signal and input is clear, you can move without second guessing, unnecessary correction, or abandoning what you already know.
Sometimes, something bigger is taking shape. Not everything is visible yet. This emerging of possibilities is usually better and bigger than you can ever imagine.
What if instead of going to the original destination of Detroit? You’re rerouted to an all-inclusive all expenses already paid vacation in the Caribbean. Dream come true, right?
Being ready to move does not mean the runway is yours yet.
Ask yourself this week:
- What are you forcing to move forward?
- How can you pause and allow the movement to emerge naturally?
The final question,
- Is this the moment to move or the moment to discern?
