Ever outgrow something? We put the time in, years in and sometimes even decades in. Careers that should have ended. The marriage that lasted 5 years longer than you could withstand. The pain that kept nagging like your grandmother.

Often, we think we can work through it. It’s all supposed to work out, right? We keep adapting. Yet, this time we start over-adapting to situations that no longer work.

Look at this tree for example. The tree trunk is hollow and completely missing for almost two feet. The tree naturally self-pruned. The tree shed the area that did not produce sufficient energy to sustain itself. The tree did not keep investing resources in every area because it was “supposed” to. The initial trunk had its purpose. The conditions changed. And the tree stopped supporting it.

A neurodivergent leader can easily supply attention, analyze, emotional energy and even cognitive bandwidth long after something has stopped contributing to the greater whole. Invested time and energy can start costing you if you don’t understand what’s no longer compounding.

Or, even a prior version or issue about yourself that is no longer relevant to your current environment.

Your initial time and energy investment was valuable at the time. Is it still?

The tree didn’t confuse its past history with its own vitality. This tree continued to grow 50 plus feet into the sky.

Many adaptions overtime are not dysfunctions or even failure. You’re now operating in a new terrain, new environment.

Release what you’ve outgrown so something new can arrive. Trust that this new space opens up more than you can ever imagine.
