Competing Concepts

Ever feel that your options are endless? Definitely a first world problem! As a spider weaves its web, there are multiple points for which a spider can connect each strand of webbing. Neurodivergent leaders excel in this pattern-recognition.

When you can see growing possibilities that exist, this simultaneously becomes both a blessing and a curse. It’s what you choose to do with the in-between that matters. That’s where applied discernment comes into play.

Bees show us a different way to operate in the decision-making field.

Honey bees swarm to choose a new home. When a swarm seeks a new nest, scout bees investigate multiple possible sites. Thus, different possibilities compete for attention. Think of your shiny new object, attention gathering syndrome that most ADHDers, entrepreneurs face. We love novelty, right?

Let’s consider how this is done differently and with applied discernment.

The bee scouts assess sites and communicate what they find. Eventually enough scouts converge around one option before the entire swarms moves to a new nest. It’s not the existence of an option that triggers a commitment. The option has to withstand examination and gain sufficient confirmation.

For those that use emotions to guide you, it’s important to recognize that excitement will make us commit to early. Often leading to incorrect, poor decisions. Allows your emotions to go through a 24 hour cycle, the highs and lows and see what’s still true afterwards.

Even the more data driven folks may not collect sufficient data to see really see a trend.

Not every discovery becomes a destination. Your capacity to see ten viable paths doesn’t require you to pursue ten paths. Let the strongest one earn your commitment.

Applied discernment determines which signal deserves your commitment. Not everything deserves your attention or more importantly your energy, time, and resources.

This week ask,

  • What still deserves your commitment after you see what will actually require?
