Ever have a sudden surprise that shakes up your world?
On April 18, 1906, the sun rays began to cast light upon San Francisco and evaporate the dense fog that accumulated each night. Then, an intense high-pitched rattle vibrates your eardrums alive as the glasses vibrate off the table and the dishes shatter onto the floor. The shriek from young kids startled not knowing what was happening. The parents gather the kids to shelter in an interior room while the entire house shakes.
Gas lines ruptured, igniting fires that rapidly spread. Outside, water pipes were shattered and severed, which depleted the capabilities to extinguish the fires.
The earthquake not only destroyed what was weak on the surface. It exposed hidden fault lines in the buildings, the ground beneath them, and the systems connecting the whole city.
Earthquakes do not cause instability. Earthquakes expose the structures that were never solid in the first place. The cracks that were always beneath the surface.
Earthquakes are a force finding release. It’s a pressure valve. Our own human communication occurs in a similar fashion. When our voice, thoughts, and emotions are compressed for too long, they do not disappear. It gathers pressure.
An earthquake is what happens when suppressed pressure forces truth into the open and exposes the fault lines in how something has been held together.
