The Work Life Balance Myth

Society taught us that our perfect life shows up in a 9-5 job, exercise, transport to/from, some social time, eat, and sleep. Repeat all over again the next day. Except we all know this is not how life plays out. Some people need more social time, others alone time.

What truly makes you flourish?

We are all unique. What makes us flourish versus our friends may be different. Our relationships show us what’s truly going on from the inside out.

Let’s look at this another way. Have you ever heard of the sport slacklining?

It is where they tie a strip of one inch webbing very tightly between two trees. The idea is to stand on the slackline and walk from one side to the other. People usually start only a foot off the ground yet pros move to slackline across mountaintops with a safety rope attached for any fall.

From the power of our core, we stay on the slackline without falling. We carefully take one step and let our body weight counter the movement. In this give and take, our core keeps us solid. With intention attention, and breath we maintain our focus and connect one movement to the next step.  We slowly make our way to the other side.

In your relationships with others, are you only focused on yourself, on them, or the interaction between you both? Only when we notice the movement one way can we counter the movement the other way.

How often do our relationships become one way, then fall apart, the same way you may fall off a slackline?

Where do you find others cheering you on and bringing out the fun or are you only doing that for others? Is it one side or both ways?

As we look for harmony and balance in our lives, it's important to evaluate the equal exchange of giving and receiving. A one sided interaction can leave us feeling resentful. With intentional attention, our interactions move us forward in life.
